Creating Spaces Where Youth Belong

Why Safe Spaces Matter Beyond the School Year

Summer is a season filled with new experiences, exploration, and opportunities for growth. For many young people, it is also a time when familiar routines change and daily connections look different.

During these moments of transition, having a welcoming and supportive community can make a lasting impact. CASA continues to create spaces where youth can build friendships, develop confidence, explore their interests, and know they have a place where they belong.

More Than Just a Place to Go:

A safe space is more than a physical location—it is an environment where young people feel respected, encouraged, and comfortable being themselves.

When youth have access to supportive spaces, they are given opportunities to form meaningful relationships, express their ideas, discover their strengths, and develop important life skills. These connections help young people feel seen and valued while building the confidence they need to navigate new challenges.

At CASA, every program, event, and gathering is centered around creating these moments of connection. Whether youth are participating in activities, spending time with peers, or engaging with supportive adults, CASA strives to provide an environment where every young person feels welcomed.

The Power of Belonging:

Belonging plays an important role in youth development. Research from the Search Institute highlights that young people thrive when they have strong relationships with caring adults and communities that support their growth, challenge them to develop, and help them recognize their own potential.

A sense of belonging can help youth:

  • build confidence and resilience,

  • develop positive relationships,

  • strengthen leadership skills,

  • and feel connected to their community.

For many young people, having trusted spaces and supportive relationships can be a meaningful part of their growth journey.

Supporting Youth Beyond the Classroom:

While school provides many opportunities for learning and connection, young people need support and encouragement throughout the entire year.

Through programs like Open Rec, Q Club, Youth Advisory Board, and Youthworks, CASA provides opportunities for youth to connect with their peers, explore new interests, and continue developing skills outside of the classroom.

Every conversation, activity, and shared experience helps strengthen the relationships that allow young people to feel supported and empowered.

A Community Built on Connection:

Creating safe spaces for youth is a community effort. Staff, volunteers, board members, families, and community partners all contribute to building an environment where young people feel encouraged and supported.

The work of CASA reflects an important truth: youth success does not happen alone. Young people grow when they are surrounded by people who believe in them, listen to them, and celebrate their accomplishments.

Research from Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child emphasizes that supportive relationships and positive environments play an important role in helping young people develop and thrive.

Continuing to Build Belonging:

Every young person deserves a place where they feel welcomed, respected, and supported. Safe spaces are created through relationships, trust, and a community commitment to showing up for one another. Throughout the summer and every season of the year, CASA remains dedicated to helping youth connect, belong, and grow.
